
Originally from Strabane in Northern Ireland, Eugene Monteith’s highlights include performances with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and Southbank Sinfonia. He was also the winner of the 2015 RTÉ Conducting Competition.
A former Young Artist at NI Opera, Eugene has conducted productions of A Hand of Bridge and Der Schauspieldirektor, and was assistant conductor on productions of Hansel and Gretel; The Flying Dutchman; The Bear; Dido and Aeneas; The Elixir of Love and Macbeth.
He also conducted Welsh National Youth Opera’s production of The Sleeper (Stephen Deazley) at the Tête-à-Tête Festival.
As a choral conductor, Eugene conducted the BBC National Chorus of Wales, Bristol Choral Society, and Salford Choral Society, and has been a guest chorus master for the National Youth Choir of Wales and Gloucester Choral Society.
Eugene enjoys conducting contemporary music having conducted projects for BBC NOW’s Composition:Wales and new commissions at Welsh National Opera including The Sleeper by Stephen Deazley, Mr Benn by Stephen McNeff, and The Hidden Valley by Richard Barnard.
Committed to educating and inspiring young artists, Eugene has appeared as a guest conductor for North Wales Youth Orchestra, Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Youth Orchestra and Gwent Youth Orchestra, as well as delivering various side-by-side projects and educational workshops for BBC NOW.
Eugene Monteith read music at Queens University Belfast studying trumpet and composition before going on to study conducting with David Jones, Adrian Partington, Simon Halsey and Neil Ferris at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, graduating with a PG Diploma in Orchestral Conducting and an MA in Choral Conducting. After graduating Eugene continued his studies with Jac van Steen and Martin Brabbins.
Alongside his conducting career, Eugene has built a successful career in arts management. He is currently the Manager of Junior RNCM in Manchester and lives in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch with his wife, Llio Evans and daughter Mali.
Eugene is currently Musical Director Brecon Festival Ballet.
